Objective: present a methodological review of the types of self-reports of self-harm and the results that have been reported in the investigations carried out with Mexican students of baccalaureate. Method: two search descriptors (both in English and Spanish) were used in various scientific databases: self-harm and non-suicidal self-injury. The inclusion criteria were: that the participants were Mexican baccalaureate students; having used a self-report to identify the presence of selfharm; the indication of the number of students or percentage that presented self-harm; and any year of publication of the article. Five investigations were identified; the self-reports used were classified into the following three categories depending on the words used: a) they specifically indicated the absence of suicidal intentionality; b) they specifically involve suicidal intentionality; and c) they did not include words that would indicate any of the previous two aspects (self harm with or without suicidal intentionality). The data figures reported regarding the presence of self-harm in each of the categories and between them differ significantly. The findings are discussed.
