The objective of the present study is to examine the prevalence of sleep quality disorders in university students and to analyze the relationship between sleep quality and executive functions (EF) of working memory, inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility. Materials and method: a sample composed of 190 university students aged 17 to 40. The Spanish version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Adult Executive Functioning Inventory (ADEXI), the Cognitive Flexibility Scale and a sociodemographic survey were used. Pearson's r correlation and Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) were used to examine the relationship between the constructs and to study whether there are differences in EF as a function of sleep quality. Results: 79.2% of the students reported poor sleep quality. A significant correlation was found between the three dimensions of the construct and the sleep quality reported by the students. Finally, significant differences were found in the EF as a function of sleep quality, with decreased cognitive processes being observed in students who reported poor sleep quality. These data favor the design of intervention strategies aimed at the problem of poor sleep quality, in order to promote favorable sleep habits and executive and academic performance in university students.
