Anxiety and Depression in Patients with Cystic Fibrosis Treated at Eugenio Espejo Hospital in the City of Quito

Introduction: The objective of this work is to establish if the existence of mood disorders influences adherence to treatment, in patients with a diagnosis of cystic fibrosis. Design: This is a quantitative observational study, which used a descriptive epidemiological design as a whole. Population and sample: the entire population of patients with cystic fibrosis admitted to the Pulmonology Department of the third level public hospital in the city of Quito, Ecuador, Eugenio Espejo, was analyzed. Main measurements: depression and anxiety using the Hamilton anxiety and depression test and adherence to treatment with the degree of compliance with the Morinsky Green test. The number of admissions during the last year was evaluated. Main results: 37 subjects with a diagnosis of cystic fibrosis were studied for 5.86 ± 4.43 years, of which 56.8%; 95% CI: 40.91 - 71.33; (N = 21) were women and 43.2% (n = 16) were males; between 18 and 40 years old, with an average age of 23.78 ± 4.96. They have depression 56.8%; 95% CI:
40.91 - 71.33; (N = 21), anxiety 67.6%; 95% IC: 51.46-80.37; (N = 25). They were compliant (adherence to the treatment of cystic fibrosis) in 24.3%; 95% CI: 13.36 - 40.12; (N = 9). Depression is related to nonadherence to treatment (p 0.024). Anxiety is related to nonadherence to treatment (p 0.002). Conclusions: The existence of anxiety and depression is related to nonadherence to treatment in patients with cystic fibrosis. Patients with non-adherent cystic fibrosis have a higher frequency of hospitalization.
