Abstract

Different epidemiological studies have reported that comorbidity in mental disorders is very frequent. In the field of emotional disorders, new theories and evidence point to underlying and common processes involved in their development and maintenance. This is why, in recent years, transdiagnostic (or unified) protocols have been developed to be applied to subjects with different diagnoses. The present study aims to review outcome studies of unified (or transdiagnostic) protocols carried out in recent years. The results show that such unified protocols are associated with symptomatic improvements in both main and comorbid diagnoses, better results than waiting list and progress comparable to evidence based protocols for specific disorders. The possibility of applying them to heterogeneous groups makes them a good option for public health systems. However, small samples and methodological limitations suggest the need for more controlled studies.
