Abstract

We can live with joy and meaning despite all the difficulties of life. By difficulties i refer to those moments that lead us to think more deeply about what really counts; they should not confuse or disorient us (although it is clear that that may occur) because we must not forget that besides insecurity there are remedies, and insecurity has a meaning: it makes us go in search for the structure and the truth of existence to be able to overcome hard circumstances. That is the meaning for us: to do something with all that happens to us. We are not victims of the situation —although of course, we could be— but seeing what we can do with what happens is the existential task: confront reality, look at it, grow in it. The question is how to do it, without giving up hope, gaining strength and maintaining it in order to continue. All these are existential issues and deal with the possibility of not-being, of losing (values, relationships, the relationship with oneself). That is what existential means: what has to do with being and with existence.
